Getting around
Here is how to use the Orus OS desktop.
The top bar
Along the top: the Orus logo, the date and time in the centre, and network and battery status on the right. The bar always stays above windows.
The dock
Along the bottom. It shows a set of fixed apps and any app you have open, with a small dot under each running app. The dock tucks out of the way under a maximised window.
The launcher
Press Super+Space. A grid of apps appears with a search box: type to filter, press Esc to close. It lists Orus apps and any program you installed with apt.
Windows
- Every app opens in its own window, with the title on the left and buttons on the right.
- Alt+Tab switches between windows and shows thumbnails.
- You can open several windows of the same app.
The power menu
Sleep, Restart, Shut down and Log out are in the power menu.
Your folders
On first login Orus creates Documents, Downloads and Pictures in your home folder. Pictures includes a few sample images and a PDF. Orus keeps its own per-user data under ~/.orus/.
Looks
Open Settings → Appearance for dark or light, five accent colours, reduce motion, and wallpaper. The whole system follows. Try it on the themes page.
Installing programs
- Orus apps: use the Store, or
orus install. See the command reference. - Debian packages:
sudo apt install <package>. They appear in the launcher.
Browser and documents
Orus OS includes two browsers: Chromium, and Cerlus, which Splenta Inc. makes. Both are in the launcher. The Office tile opens LibreOffice, and offers to install it if it isn't there yet.
